On this day in 1958, 19 year old Charles Starkweather and
his 14 year old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, kill a Lincoln businessman, his wife and their maid,
as part of a murderous crime spree which would ultimately leave 10 people dead.
The killer couple’s deadly road trip generated enormous media attention and a
massive manhunt until they were arrested near Douglas , Wyoming
This song, the title track of the LP, musically portrays
those events. It also signaled a stark change in Bruce’s musical direction.
Beginning with this album continuing to the present day, Springsteen began to
be drawn to and write these darker lyrics which required a more somber and
sparse musical accompaniment.
