worrying, my bad jokes, my bad aim and all those other annoying things you’re
tolerated all these years. Thankfully, at the end of the day regardless of
where we are……well, you know.

#970 – LENINGRAD – Billy Joel - 3/5/2020
The term “Iron Curtain” is one that will immediately evoke
the memories of the Cold War: the tension filled days after the close of World
War II. The term first truly became part of the modern day lexicon after being
used by Sir Winston Churchill is a speech at a college in Missouri on this day in 1946.
This song does an excellent job at portraying the humanity
of the people from the 2 superpowers and their ideologies. After all the political
posturing and bellicose threats, after the decades of distrust and fear that
still exists today, our similarities are at the foundation of our lives, not
our differences. Or as Joel says: “We never knew what friends we had until we
came to Leningrad ”.

#189 – WE DIDN’T START THE FIRE – Billy Joel - 1/21/2020
The 20th Amendment to our Constitution was
adopted yesterday in 1933. It stated that the beginning and ending terms for
both the president & vice-president occur at noon on January 20th. After
reading this I was trying to think of a non-specific song that recalled some of
the Presidents we’ve had in my lifetime. This one seems to fit the bill – at
least up until the “Storm Front” LP’s 1989 release.
Everyone knows the song. If you don’t you can find it
yourself easy enough. I thought I would post this video instead, which details
Billy’s thinking behind the song. This song brings me back to my days on the
green in New Haven
while working in Private Banking at Connecticut Bank & Trust.
Coincidentally, this was where I first met my friend Susan Tremonte
Moffa (thank goodness). I like her new name better.

A lot of songs on this list remind me of my brief but
eventful years on the radio at WWUH. I learned a lot about life, people,
loyalty and music. This one always remind me of those days because it features
Toots Thielemans, the late Belgian harmonica maestro.
When I was at ‘UH we had a huge classical and jazz following.
They still do, actually. Anyway, I learned about Toots during my tenure at ‘UH
well, before he showed up gracing this tune from “An Innocent Man”. The vinyl
library at WWUH was spectacular and the REAL jazz DJs who knew their sh1te from
shinola schooled us younger lunkheads in the art of JAZZ. Stephane Grapelli,
Charles Mingus, Larry Coryell, Wayne Shorter, Brubeck, Trane, Monk, Miles,
Jackie McLean (whose daughter was a DJ while I was there). All names unfamiliar
to me until those kind people opened my ears.
