#167 – RACING IN THE STREET – Bruce Springsteen & the E. St. Band - 5/30/2020

The very first Indianapolis 500 was won by Ray Harroun on May 30 1911. Harroun crossed the finish line ahead of thirty-nine other cars. Originally founded as a test track to test the potential top speeds of the different auto producers, the thought was that a centralized high-performance track would create an environment for high speed unavailable due to the then poorly developed public roadways.

#901 – KITTY’S BACK – Bruce Springsteen & the E. St. Band – 4/17/2020

Danny Federici, longtime keyboard player with Bruce Springsteen in the E. St. Band, passed away 12 years ago on this date after his battle with cancer. This version is one of Federici’s stand outs – originally found on the 1973 LP “The Wild, The Innocent & The E. St. Shuffle” – which comes from the Bruce’s legendary tour of the U.K. in ’75. The band is hitting on all 12 cylinders (it’s in Britain so I thought XKE Jag, 12 cylinders? – go for it). This version is a bit long but WELL worth the investment of your time. It is performances like this one that garnered Springsteen the reputation as one of the best showmen in music.

#479 – NEBRASKA – Bruce Springsteen – 1/28/2020

On this day in 1958, 19 year old Charles Starkweather and his 14 year old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, kill a Lincoln businessman, his wife and their maid, as part of a murderous crime spree which would ultimately leave 10 people dead. The killer couple’s deadly road trip generated enormous media attention and a massive manhunt until they were arrested near Douglas, Wyoming.

This song, the title track of the LP, musically portrays those events. It also signaled a stark change in Bruce’s musical direction. Beginning with this album continuing to the present day, Springsteen began to be drawn to and write these darker lyrics which required a more somber and sparse musical accompaniment.
