“A Charlie Brown Christmas” first aired on CBS 54 years ago
today.
A little known fact: LINUS & LUCY was composed for a
proposed 1964 TV special on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. The special in question
never aired, but a Peanuts Christmas special was created the next year and the
rest is history. The soundtrack album went on to be certified
quadruple-platinum sales status (over 4 million copies sold), ranking it in the
Top 10 total sales of all Holiday album releases.
I cannot help but recall my first year at CU in the fall of
1980. I bought the LP originally at the old Rocky Mountain Records & Tapes
store on the Pearl St Mall in Boulder .
It became a favorite for my floor-mates at the Williams’ Village dorm 5th
floor. What an amazing 4 months with an amazing cross-section of humanity, some
of whom I am fortunate enough to still count among my friends all these years
later.
