#2434 – JACOB MARLEY’S CHAIN – 12/19/2019
On December 19, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A
Christmas Carol” is published. At the time, his writing career was in a slump. Dickens
figured a successful Christmas book could solve his then pending financial woes.
His goal wasn't to pen a timeless work of art. His dire financial situation was
his motivation. “A Christmas Carol” was an immediate success. The debut print
run of 6,000 copies, which arrived on December 19, sold out in a week.
Aimee Mann gained her initial fame as the vocalist and
songwriter behind the 80’s hit VOICES CARRY by her group ‘Til Tuesday.
Though Mann’s song references the character in Dickens’
classic, it is not necessarily a Christmas song. I was immediately taken with
this song upon first listen. Aimee’s voice and delivery are pretty similar from
song to song, but these caustic lyrics were impossible for me to ignore. Now
this isn’t a feel-good toe tapper, but a well-written song gets me every time. It
became an immediate fave. The song can be found on Mann’s “Whatever” release
from 1993.
