Happy birthday, Gerry Rafferty.
Gerry Rafferty, the Scotsman who’s first hit with his
partner Joe Boyd “STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU” is almost as ubiquitous today as
it was in 1972 when it came out. Gerry Rafferty, whose first band The Humblebums consisted of Rafferty and (comedian-turned-actor) Billy Connolly was a
bust. Gerry Rafferty, whose simple yet hook-laden songs finally gained him the
pop music success he deserved in the mid ‘70’s – for a few years anyway, Gerry
Rafferty, who sadly died of liver failure in 2011.
I have always liked Rafferty’s songs. No one will every
mistake his sound with Dylan, or Neil Young, or John Prime or Paul Simon. But I
think I like him BECAUSE he had his own style: simple, melodic, direct and
sonically sweet yet with a hint of melancholy. Much in the way I would envision
I would write a song, had I the talent.
Gerry Rafferty, who was born on this day in 1947 in Paisley
Scotland. Thank you, Gerry.
