Friday’s Nugget: “One for Rock and Roll” – Cinderella - 1990

Where did this big hair band song come from? One of the wonderful things about being me is that there are 352,642,501 different permutations of musical tastes running ...around in my skull. It’s a tough thing to keep track of – believe me.

Today’s Nugget comes from 1990’s Heartbreak Station and goes out to one my wife’s best friends, Nancy Viggiano. I have come to really love Nancy. There are MANY wonderful things to say about Nancy but the main reason she is so special to me is – SHE GETS MY OBTUSE JOKES! There aren’t too many out there I can say that about. (kidding - no one gets my obtuse jokes - Nancy is just kind enough to laugh at them)

Nancy is making a fairly large life change this month, moving from the Nutmeg State to the Sunshine State, starting a new job in November. As I was contemplating this week’s Nugget I had mentally queued up Utopia’s “On The Road to Utopia” which is a shared favorite. But this morning the old IPod roulette wheel spun this one up on random play and the rest is history (history may be pushing it but you get the idea).

I sort of forget about Cinderella – great guitar by Tom Keifer (nice pedal steel in this one). Being a positive minded person, I will not comment of Keifer’s vocal (violent coughing ensues) talents except to say, at least he’s not Steve Perry. That qualifies as glass-is-half-full, doesn’t it? Will anyone ever mistake his songwriting skills for Bob Dylan or John Lennon (or even Yoko Ono) - NO. But laying aside my music snob chapeau for a moment, sometimes things all come together to form a nice sloppy rock tune. “One for Rock and Roll” is a good example.

Philly’s Cinderella is one of my favorite big hair bands (Tesla being the other). The rest of the lot did nothing for me – (Sorry I was an REM, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Smithereens guy). I guess Cinderella took me by surprise me when I actually listened to them. They didn’t just write about groupies, getting wasted, or whatever Bon Jovi wrote about. The lyrics to this one seemed pretty apropos. Keifer tips his hat to his rock and roll guitar – for getting him through his childhood days in the 60’s and the emotional and economic tough years of the 70’s. Refreshing stuff for the Aqua Net/mousse set. Oh, and is that humility I hear in the background? He sums it up in the chorus:

"Now I don’t need to worry ‘bout tomorrow / Ain’t anticipating what’s to come / And I don’t need to worry ‘bout / The things I have not done
As long as I’ve got rock and roll / I’m forever young"

Good luck in Florida there, little sis. Kick ass. Take names. Keep laughing and never forget to Rock and Roll.

P.S. – Nance, I will christen the party cup this evening with a toast in your honor. Love ya.
