#2313 – ONE OF OUR SUBMARINES – Thomas Dolby - 6/4/2020

Hitler’s U-Boat fleet was one of the more ominous and deadly
foes the Allies had to survive and conquer in the Atlantic & Mediterranean
seas. On this day in 1944,  U-505 is
seized as it makes its way home after patrolling the Gold Coast of Africa. The
German submarine was the first enemy warship captured on the high seas by the
U.S. Navy since the War of 1812.

I love this Thomas Dolby song. It is one my favorite songs
from the 80’s, even if it does employ those stupid syn-drum machines. Dolby
started off his music career as an oddity. ONE OF OUR SUBMARINES was the B-side
of his bigger first single: SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE. Both were very popular
on both AM & FM radio as well as MTV. But Dolby has gone on to more than
prove his worth, releasing several albums, producing himself & others, as
an entrepreneur & professor at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

Dolby wrote the song in homage to his uncle, a British
submariner who passed away aboard the HMC P48 on Christmas Day, 1942. He wrote
the lyrics based on the family lore. However, after the declassification of
documents has since found that the vessel was sunk at sea after an
action-packed deployment during the early days of WWII.
