#19 – EVEN THE LOSERS – 10/20/2019
Today Tom Petty would have turned 69 years old. Yesterday,
Petty & the Heartbreakers’ crowning achievement “Damn the Torpedoes”
celebrated the 40th anniversary of its release. To that end, today’s
tune is my favorite (of many) TP tune: EVEN THE LOSERS.
There isn’t much to add to what has already been written of
this song and album. It is still hard to believe Tom is no longer with us, no
longer filling our ears with music. Like so many other bands, their best songs
became something greater than just a bunch of people playing together. Stated
differently, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were a BAND – finely tuned to each
other and the music they were creating. Never boring. Never formulaic. Never
false.
Enough. I’ll just end by sending a heartfelt thanks into the
ether and leave you with the lyrics from this spectacular tune:
“Well it was nearly summer, we sat on your roof. Yeah we
smoked cigarettes and we stared at the moon. I showed you stars you never could
see. Babe, it couldn't have been that easy to forget about me.
Baby time meant nothin' anything seemed real. Yeah you could
kiss like fire and you made me feel like every word you said was meant to be. Babe,
it couldn't have been that easy to forget about me.
[Chorus:]
Baby even the losers get lucky sometimes
Even the losers keep a little bit of pride, they get lucky
sometimes.
Two cars parked on the overpass. Rocks hit the water like
broken glass.
I should have known right then it was too good to last. It's
such a drag when you live in the past
