#794 – LIVING ON THE FAULT LINE – The Doobie Brothers - 4/18/2020

On April 18, 1906, at 5:13 a.m., an earthquake estimated at close to 8.0 on the Richter scale strikes San Francisco, California, killing an estimated 3,000 people. The quake was caused by a slip of the San Andreas Fault over a segment about 275 miles long. Shock  waves could be felt from southern Oregon down to Los Angeles.

NoCal’s Doobie Brothers had morphed from their crunchy guitar driven roadhouse earlier music to a more polished sound by the time “Living on the Fault Line” came out in 1977 (Check out the cover art for 1977!). It was the first Doobies LP since their first Warner Brothers release not so score a Top 40 hit, but it did have a penchant for slightly more sonically challenging tunes like this title track written by Patrick Simmons. It showcases some fine musicianship: stellar guitar work by Simmons and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter as well as some tasty vibes from session player Victor Feldman.
