#1385 – I’M A WOMAN – 11/3/2019
On this day in 1924 in our neighboring state of Wyoming , Nellie Tayloe
Ross defeated E.J. Sullivan by 11,000 votes and became the first female
governor. Though a Democrat at the time, by today’s standards she would be an
independent championing both conservative (prohibition) and liberal (toughening
child labor laws) ideals. In 1933 she became the first female Director of the
U.S mint, service 5 terms until her retirement in 1953.
Suffice to say this song wasn’t played at Nellie Tayloe
Ross’ inaugural ball but I thought it still appropriate. Originally a hit for Peggy Lee in the ‘50’s
from same songwriters who gave us “Hound Dog” Mike Leiber & Jerry Stoller,
Maria made it her own on the 1974 LP “Waitress in a Donut Shop”. The LP
featured an all-star lineup of players: Paul Butterfield on harp, Elvin Bishop
on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, Lowell George on slide & David Grisman on
mandolin amongst others. I just love her sassy delivery. W-O-M-A-N indeed!
