#1204 – AM RADIO – 11/2/2019
I resemble that remark.
On this day in 1920 Pittsburgh
radio station KDKA became the first commercial radio station in the USA . To say the
industry has changed over the years is an understatement of gargantuan
proportions. Not only has over the air content changed, the music industry has
changed, also. But when I was growing up in the late 60’s and early 70’s AM
radio was IT. WDRC specifically – 1360 on your dial – was the pop music
flagship in central CT. My ears were glued to it when they weren’t tuned into a
BoSox or UConn Huskies basketball games.
Though Everclear leader Art Alexakis is clearly a couple of
years younger than I (based on TV references) the under-riding theme of the
song holds true: “I'd be in bed with the radio on. I would listen to it all
night long just to hear my favorite song. You'd have to wait till you could
hear it on the AM radio”.
I’d like to dedicate this song to my baby-sitter cousins
Pauline and Lena with lots of love, who’d let me “listen to their
AM radios (AM radios)”.
