This song is a favorite for many reasons.
First off, it swings. The song comes from a posthumous
release from the legendary jazz arranger and pianist Bill Evans: “You Must
Remember Spring”.
The second reason I love this song so is because I first
heard it while on the air at WWUH in early 1980. There are a handful of songs
that immediately transport me to the small studio and great people I met during
my short 2 years there. This is one of them.
The third reason is I love M*A*S*H. At the risk of sounding
like a tube freak, I grew up watching that show from its early days to the very
last episode which aired 37 years ago this past Friday. Me and 106 million
other people watched as Hawkeye’s helicopter pulled off the pad and he saw BJ’s
“note” to him written with stones on the ground: “GOODBYE”.
