Sixty seven years ago today, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing
Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount
Everest . Nowadays there is literally so much traffic and guided
tours up the mountain it has a pollution problem, but in 1953 making the summit
was a monumental achievement.
It also allows a pretty good segue into this track from an
early ELO concert recording which was released in America as an import LP titled
“The Night the Light Went on in Long Beach”. The sound of the initial recording
was atrocious and has since been remixed and mastered during the CD years. It
is tough to find a Youtube version of the actual track, but it shows the
wilder, classically-fused side of ELO, which became wildly popular for softer
hits like MR BLUE SKY & TELEPHONE LINE.
