The very first Indianapolis
500 was won by Ray Harroun on May 30 1911. Harroun crossed the finish line ahead
of thirty-nine other cars. Originally founded as a test track to test the
potential top speeds of the different auto producers, the thought was that a
centralized high-performance track would create an environment for high speed
unavailable due to the then poorly developed public roadways.
