#970 – LENINGRAD – Billy Joel - 3/5/2020

The term “Iron Curtain” is one that will immediately evoke the memories of the Cold War: the tension filled days after the close of World War II. The term first truly became part of the modern day lexicon after being used by Sir Winston Churchill is a speech at a college in Missouri on this day in 1946.

This song does an excellent job at portraying the humanity of the people from the 2 superpowers and their ideologies. After all the political posturing and bellicose threats, after the decades of distrust and fear that still exists today, our similarities are at the foundation of our lives, not our differences. Or as Joel says: “We never knew what friends we had until we came to Leningrad”.
