A local Scottish paper, the Inverness Courier, reported on
this day 87 years ago of “a large beast or whale-like” fish rolling in the
waters of Loch Ness. And so it began.
Although never specifically naming the Scottish beastie, I
would wager that this tune is still the most famous of all songs referencing
Nessie. The second of 2 title tracks which opened and closed the 1st
side of the LP that exploded the popularity of 2 Brits and an American known
better as The Police.
Sting (aka Gordon Sumner) was able to craft a song detailing
the simmering malais lying just beneath the surface of the seemingly placid life
of a modern suburbanite. Although this has been fodder for many of rock &
roll song lyrics, Sting was able to add a different touch of menace by referencing
“a shadow on the door of a cottage on the shore of a dark Scottish lake.” Some
rather nice imagery, that.
