On this day in 1885 Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn” was published. No less a judge than Ernest Hemingway famously
declared that the book marked the beginning of American literature: “There was
nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.”
Buffett has often cited Twain as a major influence. This
song references Twain’s travelogue “Following the Equator”. I guess the acorn
didn’t fall too far from the tree.
