On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay shocks the
odds-makers by dethroning world heavyweight boxing champ Sonny Liston in a
seventh-round technical knockout.
Although this bout marked the end of Liston’s ascendency and
would be a chapter in the legend of Muhammad Ali, it seemed like a good
opportunity to show off the songwriting chops of Mark Knopfler. This tale of
Sonny Liston – warts and all - comes from one of Knopfler’s fine post-Dire
Straits releases, “Shangri La”.
