I’ll never forget the first time I heard this longer
version. I was cruising through the CSN boxed set I had just bought. It was
chock full of CSN artifacts (solo works, live cuts, greatest hits, rarities all
in one place) and I was excited to hear some of the solo track I previously
only had on vinyl. When I was reading the liner notes I saw a long version
(original “Déjà Vu” LP version was 4+ minutes) so I figured it was live. I
started listening and realized it was the studio. Curious to explain the time
difference, I continued on through the rest of the song and was blown away at
the jam that finishes the song. I must have played the whole track 4 or 5 times
back to back. This is one of the best artist boxed set compilations. It is a rarity
that really punctuates Crosby ’s angry lyrics
sonically as well as lyrically and changed my immersion in the song.
