#1514 – CLEVER GIRL – Tower of Power - 1/18/2020

I can’t help but think of my 3 running mates (Steve O’Neal, Doug Joyce & Chuck Holmes) in the early 70’s whenever I hear certain music: Led Zeppelin IV, FZ & The Mothers’ Overnight Sensation, Alice Cooper’s SCHOOL’S OUT and any track from the eponymous release from Tower of Power.

This album is perfection to my ear. It showcases TOP at their studio best, although the best way to experience Tower of Power is to see them LIVE. I love Lenny Williams’ lead vocal. I love Chester Thompson’s keyboard glissando on this track. I love all the percussion (congas & kit). I love the horn charts; their playing was the best in the business. This is 70’s R & B at its best.

So Doug, Chuck & Steve, wherever you are I hope fate is smiling on you! Long live Main St. East Hartford, Ct., endless basketball games in Doug’s driveway, and South Windsor Ten Pin Bowl.
